Safe Travel Tips
While traveling abroad for humanitarian work, the odds are in your
favor that you will have a safe and incident-free trip. However, humanitarian
travelers are sometimes victimized by crime and violence, or experience
unexpected difficulties. Happily, most problems can be solved
by your sponsors or over the telephone or by a visit to the Consular
Section of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Additional Safe Travel Tips:
- Avoid walking alone or traveling to remote places after dark; avoid
poorly lit streets and narrow alleys.
- Do not wear flashy jewelry.
- Avoid public demonstrations, accidents or civil disturbances.
- Do not engage in loud conversations or arguments.
- Avoid discussing personal matters with people you do not know.
- Keep a phrase book handy.
- If you wear glasses or contacts, pack an extra pair. Bring them
and any medicines you need in your carry-on luggage.
- Know how to use the pay phones in the country you are visiting,
and carry exact change in local currency.
- Avoid bringing any unnecessary attention to yourself.
